Codes generally include the building codes, which are regional and the National Electrical CodeĀ® (NEC). NEC is the U.S. Standard for the safe installation of electrical equipment and wiring. State, regional, and local electrical codes are usually based on the NEC, though some impose differing or additional requirements. While there is a specific section (Article 690) of the NEC that is dedicated to PV systems, the majority of the remainder of the NEC is also applicable to PV systems. Local electrical inspectors use their code to determine what is and what is not acceptable.

In the Codes Section of this web site, you can learn about:

  • Proposed changes to the NEC relating to PV and information on how you can provide input and comments;
  • A study of deployment barriers posed by cumbersome or ambiguous local permitting fees and processes.
